The Next Chapter in Sustainability: Clothing Recycling

The Next Chapter in Sustainability: Clothing Recycling

We believe that sustainability must start at the very beginning, designing clothes based on lasting styles with the most sustainable fibers available and taking care of the HUMAN BEINGS who are a part of each step in this process. But it cannot end there.

It's also crucial to think about what happens to our clothing when we are done using it. One piece of this can be planned for by selecting natural fibers that can biodegrade more quickly, and avoiding blended fabrics that are more difficult to recycle. This is why you will notice that all KNOWN SUPPLY products are made with natural fibers (like GOTS Certified Organic Cotton) and others with only minimal blends of synthetic fibers.

Beyond the opportunity for recycling, the best case for lightly worn garments is re-use — reselling clothing to be loved again by another owner. This can also help with accessibility as the price points are friendlier for secondhand items.

For more than 2 years we have been researching and vetting partners to help us figure out how we can responsibly manage our products (and really any clothing) at the end of their lives, and we are excited to share some exciting news on this front.

We are partnering with Homeboy Threads — a social enterprise providing gang rehabilitation programs in Los Angeles, CA — to help responsibly recycle clothing.

They have built a recycling facility in South L.A. where they are processing shipments, sorting clothing, and finding the next best use for garments to help them avoid the landfill.

We are partnering with them to make their Second Chance Bag, and subsequently their clothing recycling services, accessible to all. How it works:

1) Purchase a Second Chance Bag on our website here.

2) Fill it will clean clothing you no longer wear, and mail it back to their facility with a pre-paid label.

3) Receive a $20 store credit to purchase sustainable clothing you need, or donate the proceeds to help provide more gang rehabilitation services.

Through this partnership we will see KNOWN SUPPLY items see a longer life through re-selling (more on this soon), they will make it possible to recycle fabrics "fiber-to-fiber" to create new materials, and creatively find new ways to "downcycle" clothing into long-term functional uses.
