Recycle Old Clothes. Earn $$$.
We are not going to purchase our way out of climate disaster, meaning purchasing sustainable products won't solve the larger issue. In fact, the most sustainable clothes any of us have are the ones already in our closet. They were already made and the longer we use them the less waste we create.
But what do you do when we need to purchase new clothes? What should we do with our clothes that need to go?
The sad truth is that clothing donation (to charity shops & the like) is problematic, to say the least. The large majority of donated clothing is other sent directly to the landfill, incinerated, or sent overseas. And overseas donations prove to cause even further issues by flooding local markets with cheap wares and putting clothing makers out of business, to provide just one example. As this article from our friends at Good On You states: "The golden rule of clothing donation is this: if items aren’t fit for you wear, they’re often not fit for anyone else." (source)
Here are a few things you can do instead:
• Mend or fix your clothing
• Re-sell your clothes (online or at local consignment stores)
• Donate specifically requested items by local charities
• Buy a Take Back Bag & let us recycle for you
Our friends ForDays have been pioneers in the circular fashion space for some time now — meaning they are constantly innovating new ways to ensure clothes don't end up in landfills.
We believe in collaboration over competition...
So we were thrilled when they reached out to partner with us to incorporate their Take Back Bag initiative on our website. Here's how it works...
1) You purchase a Take Back Bag for $20
2) You fill the bag with your old clothing
3) You receive a $20 credit for our website (with $100 purchase)
4) ForDays recycles the clothing into insulation used in construction
We just ask that you fill your Take Back Bag with clean clothes, and please don't include any underwear. :) Then you will have credit to buy new ethical pieces for your wardrobe. Talk about a transformation!
